چکیده

Abstract Numerous permanent and temporary wetlands occur throughout the world’s drylands. Although characterised by diverse water inundation frequencies, durations depths, these in drylands are typically hotspots of biological activity productivity. The healthy functioning even existence many drylands, however, is threatened desiccation resulting from a combination climate change human disturbance. Near Alcañiz arid northeast Spain, three adjacent saladas (playas) with contrasting hydroperiods provide an opportunity to investigate how moisture availability affects their soil carbon (C) stocks, CO 2 efflux, microbial communities. Predicting impacts changes on C cycle challenging but important because contain large stocks may be significant sources sinks greenhouse gases. Frequent and/or near-permanent saturation supports generation organic range different sources. Soil inorganic was greatest driest salada (3.8%) compared wetter (3.0% 2.1%) owing evaporative concentration reaction available Ca 2+ , Mg Na + ions. efflux at intermediate levels (142 mg m −2 h −1 ), spatial temporal variability surfaces large, demonstrating need for intensive sampling regimes realistic estimates contribution atmospheric exchanges. Different community structures also characterise each salada. near Alcañiz, other similar features renowned rare flora fauna, yet characteristics communities additional reasons monitor protect vulnerable environments further anthropogenic disturbances.

Carbon dioxide efflux from a 550 m soil across a range of soil temperatures

Because of scaling problems point measurements of soil CO2 efflux on a small volume of soil may not necessarily reflect an overall community response. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis in the Biosphere 2 facility and achieve the following broad goals: (1) investigate soil net CO2 exchange–temperature relationship at the community level; (2) compare soil net CO2 exchange at the c...

Microbial physiology and soil CO2 efflux after 9 years of soil warming in a temperate forest – no indications for thermal adaptations

Thermal adaptations of soil microorganisms could mitigate or facilitate global warming effects on soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition and soil CO2 efflux. We incubated soil from warmed and control subplots of a forest soil warming experiment to assess whether 9 years of soil warming affected the rates and the temperature sensitivity of the soil CO2 efflux, extracellular enzyme activities, m...
